Stress – how does it affect us ?

Stress is everywhere in modern life now and can result in varied problems such as migraines, back/neck complaints, stomach and digestive problems or feelings of distress or being unable to cope with life. This can often lead us to the act of avoiding certain situations or perhaps forcing yourself to be in these situations but feeling fearful and anxious throughout. You may well be developing anxiety about a certain situation long in advance by the manner of your thinking about it, but feel powerless to change the way you view it.

Panic attacks

If you ever suffered a panic attack, you will understand exactly the horror and anxiety they cause. Panic attacks are surprisingly common and symptoms include palpitations, shortness of breath – hyperventilating, sweating and feelings of loss of control. Every symptom that you experience in the midst of an attack is a harmless, natural part of your body’s fight-or-flight reaction to stressors, but can be very frightening at the time as you feel so out of control.

Your anxieties can be easily managed as long as your thoughts and beliefs regarding a particular situation are realistic. However, if you over-estimate the perceived danger and these emotions are fuelled by catastrophic thoughts, your anxiety will increase greatly. Once a panic attack is experienced in a given situation the mind can quickly associate that event with anxiety thus learning to fear the situation itself. Essentially, the panic attack or response can be trained to be prompted by the situation itself.

The good news, however, is that many people have recovered from suffering from panic attacks and anxieties with the help of The Thrive Programme. And you can too!
