Help for Emetophobia in Oxford, Buckinghamshire & Hertfordshire
What is Emetophobia ?
Emetophobia is a continual and unprovoked fear of vomit or vomiting and, according to the International Emetophobia Society, it is the fifth most common phobia.
Of all the enquiries that I receive from sufferers of phobias, Emetophobia is considerably the most common. Sufferers find it often extremely limiting and disabling, many of whom have already sought treatment to little or no avail.
It is a common misconception among emetophobes that there is no cure – a myth perpetuated frequently by emetophobia forums. This is simply not true ! Even most doctors don’t understand the phobia fully and generally prefer to prescribe anti-anxiety meds for it !
Emetophobia interferes with virtually every aspect of a sufferers life; education, career, marriage, family relationships etc. Many emetophobes take time off work or away from studies unnecessarily due to the fear of vomiting themselves or being exposed to people who can pass on germs that will cause them to vomit. Many suffer panic or anxiety attacks when they forsee the slightest possibility that they may vomit.
Unhappily, some women even choose against motherhood for fear of morning sickness and some sufferers even remain housebound due to their fear. Emetophobia envelopes a huge amount of time of the sufferers life; there is the constant worry when the threat of vomiting will occur next. This mental stress takes a significant toll on the emetophobe.
I was searching for help for my 12 year old son who was being completely controlled by his huge fear of being sick. Thrive has given my son his life back and more. He feels more confident and says he now understands that he can control his reactions to anything! Thank you so much Simon. Jo C.
Emetophobia – the secret phobia
Emetophobia is a widely unheard of phobia partly due to the nature of it’s subject being unpleasant and dirty and sufferers are acutely embarrassed by it. The majority of emetophobes are female who have retained symptoms since their youth. They have wasted years actively avoiding situations where either they or someone around them could become ill. Those with mild symptoms can have anxious thoughts whilst eating whereas those who suffer severely can sometimes refuse to leave their homes. Many have terrible panic attacks when they feel nauseous and will spend large amounts of time trying to figure out methods of avoidance.
Profile and behaviours of a typical Emetophobe…
- Is probably female and below average weight
- Rarely eats out in restaurants
- Is pre-occupied with germs/contamination
- Does not drink alcohol
- Avoids pubs/clubs where others may drink heavily
- Dislikes dinner parties, weddings, social events and crowded rooms
- Avoids flying and travelling by boat, especially to foreign countries
- Avoids public transport, preferring to travel by car and driving themselves

The Thrive Programme for Emetophobia
You can completely change the way you think and feel about situations that are connected to being sick. The vast majority of emetophobes that I have helped have a defined style of thinking that worsens and maintains their symptoms.
They usually feel incredibly powerless and fearful about their thoughts of vomiting and this drives them to actively avoid any situation where they may be confronted with the possibility of it – and the more you avoid something, the more fear you build up around it and the more out of control you will feel.
Added to this, there is a very strong desire to control the situations in life that ordinarily can not (and need not) be controlled. There is also a strong obsessive, brooding component to their thinking, which only serves to exacerbate the problem.
In just a few weekly sessions, I can teach you how to feel completely in control of yourself and your responses, thoughts and feelings – no longer feeling powerless in the face of this unpleasant phobia.
The Thrive Programme is an incredibly succesful programme that helps you to understand how to grasp control of the beliefs, thoughts and emotions that maintain the symptom.
When you absolutely understand how your mind operates, such as the interaction between your thinking, beliefs, personality and feelings, you will feel much more empowered and in control. When you recognise that almost all of your worries, stresses, problems and symptoms are either created, maintained or worsened by poorly managed thinking, you will feel fabulously empowered……..and because YOU created these problems then YOU can change them!
This course of treatment does not contain any myths, magic or mumbo-jumbo. It is simply an empowering and liberating psychological training programme, created with proven scientific research, and with your input, it will allow you to overcome your emetophobia.
You will find that it is much easier and faster than you ever believed to take control and get the life you have missed out on for so long!
