Treatment for fears & phobias at The Herts Thrive Clinic serving Watford, Bushey, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Hertfordshire & the surrounding areas.
Approximately 11% of the UK population experience a phobia at some time in their lives. A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, feeling, animal or situation which develops when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of perceived danger. Indeed, people can develop a phobic response to almost any circumstance.
Agoraphobia is an irrational fear in situations where the sufferer perceives certain environments as dangerous or uncomfortable, often due to the locations vast openness or crowdedness. These situations include wide-open spaces, as well as uncontrollable social situations such as the possibility of being met in shopping malls, airports and on bridges. Agoraphobia is classified as a subset of panic disorder, possibly also involving the fear of incurring a panic attack in those environments. The sufferer may go to great lengths to avoid certain situations, in severe cases becoming unable to leave their home or safe haven. Studies have shown two different age groups at first onset: early to mid twenties, and early thirties.
If a phobia becomes too extreme, the sufferer could organise their lives actively avoiding the object of their fear. As well as it severely restricting their day to day lives, it can also cause persistent anguish.
To gauge the degree to which your fear is affecting your life, ask yourself the following:
- Do I spend an excessive amount of time thinking about my fear?
- Is my fear affecting my physical condition?
- When I think of this fear does my pulse increase, do my hands shake, do I feel nauseas?
- Does this fear make me depressed?
- Does this fear make me do things the hard way, such as planning road travel so as to avoid driving over bridges, or walk the long way to the shops to avoid a neighbours dog? Does it prevent me from going on holiday to where I would really like to go?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are likely to have a phobia and may consider treatment so that it no longer interferes with your life. So if you are in need of help for a fear of open spaces in Hemel Hempstead, we can help with The Thrive Programme.
